Ranchy
February 28, 2008
My dad just called the tomato that’s been sitting on the stove for the last two weeks “ranchy.” I think he meant raunchy.
Although, the idea of slicing into a tomato to discover what looks like ranch dressing is pretty disgusting.
Bad News:
My best-(inanimate)-friend, the dictionary, just alerted me to this!
Raunchy means sexually explicit! X-rated! Lewd!
What a lewd tomato! Clearly, neither I nor my father have any idea what we’re talking about.

An Unfair Trade
February 28, 2008
Sometimes I feel ridiculously good at making up titles to things.
Anyway.
Could we be getting more than we bargained for in the quest for fairness? Specifically, the commercialization of “justice,” most blatant in the [RED] campaign. Could we be replacing blissful ignorance with smug pride?
After all, it’s not just coffee you’re buying, they’re selling you a cup of fair trade “feel-good-about-yourself.” As if you’ve done all you need to do for the developing world that day, and well, even if your charity goes no further than Starbucks, certainly you’re better than the poor shmoe who just bought a cuppa at Timmy’s.
I am Thankful …
February 28, 2008
because I woke up this morning to the sun shining on my bed.
because I did some great devotions and when my pen ran out, I had another.
because I went grocery shopping, and there was a sale on frozen dinners.
because I got to exercise, and I’m getting stronger.
because the ROM is still spectacular, even though some of the exhibits haven’t changed since I last went in grade school.
because the ROM’s gift shop is open for an hour after the museum closes, boo yah! (I am renowned for liking museum/art gallery gift shops more than the actual museum/art gallery)
because I had delicious spicy seafood Pad Thai for dinner for cheap at a lovely little restaurant, Asian Noodle Bowl.
because I saw an old friend, Travis Lowry, randomly at CIBC.
because my fiance found out that the Bloor Cinema was playing Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and we watched them!
because when two separate Second Cups were closed at 11:30 at night, Tim Horton’s was open.
because even though I may have sprained my groin dancing alone in my room a couple days ago, I am still pretty mobile.
because my God loves me too much to let me complain, and get away with it.
I’m Rich

I will not trust in my riches
but in God, who so richly provides.

I know how comfortable it is to curl up with a nice, fat book full of big words and think you’re going to solve all the problems in the universe. But you’re not, you know. A bit of action is required every now and then.

I Am Legend
February 21, 2008
I have fallen in love with this movie.
If you found War of the Worlds terrifying, this might be too much for you, but if you found that movie (or movies like it) exhilarating, then I’d say you can handle I Am Legend. Children of Men is another good one.
What I love about these end-of-the-world themed films is how they beg you to ask the question, What if it were me? There is something sacred about the feeling I get watching Will Smith’s performance. My empathy flowed with that character; his fears, his loneliness, and his dependency on Samantha, his German Shepherd and sole companion. I haven’t cried so hard in a long time.
“The world is quieter now,” is a quote from the movie. I won’t give away from where. It is unsettling to see that all that we strive for in New York (a symbolic city of what the West stands for in many ways) really is meaningless. Our loved ones die, fire destroys, grass overgrows, and all we’ve built crumbles. Ironically, with the help of Hollywood, we can imagine our world fade from glory, and perhaps learn to see through to that which is eternal. It is a precious moment indeed when we realize that special ‘other’ in our lives (maybe it’s a beach ball) is so absolutely indispensable to our well being.
Yea, it might just be another Hollywood blockbuster filled with CGI demoniacs, but to me it is a lens that shows how short my life is, and how precious is the love I have in it.
